State Poverty Rate Goes Up

Between 2009 and 2010, the number of Californians living below poverty jumps from about 5.1 million to 5.8 million, according to new U.S. Census Bureau report.

The number of Californians living below poverty has slowly continued to rise—a trend that also has been recorded on a national level.

The poverty rate nationwide jumped from 14.3 to 15.3 percent between 2009 and 2010, according to a report from the U.S. Census Bureau released Thursday (see accompanying document under photo.)

That means now about 46.2 million Americans are living in poverty.

The bureau's report measured income and household relationship data during that one-year time period, comparing the data among states.
