Supermoon Rising in Night Sky

The rare celestial event, in which the moon appears bigger and brighter, is Saturday night.

A full moon Saturday night will appear to be the biggest and brightest in almost 20 years, according to NASA. Hermosans with a clear view of the sky will be able to see the so-called "supermoon" near the horizon at sunset.

The appearance of a full moon varies due to the elliptical shape of the moon's orbit. On the side closest to the Earth, the perigee, is where the moon appears to be about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than normal.

NASA measures a perigee supermoon to be 356,577 kilometers from the Earth. The apogee is where the moon is farthest from Earth.

A supermoon can bring to coastlines high "perigean tides," which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says is only a couple of inches higher than the normal tide range. The last supermoon occurred in March 1993.
