The South Bay area was busy this week leading up to the Memorial Day weekend. Here's a look at what made news in our communities:

Manhattan Beach

Manhattan Beach police reported that they have arrested two men for their involvement in an attempted bicycle theft. Police also made five arrests after stopping a vehicle that was determined to be stolen.

Manhattan Beach leaders and community members gathered at Polliwog Park last Saturday to celebrate their city's 100th anniversary. Patch was there to capture the celebration in photos.

Redondo Beach

More than 150 people gathered at the  on Tuesday to celebrate the lives of four men who died while sailing in the annual Lexus Newport Beach to Ensenada Yacht Race at the end of April. Throughout the memorial, attendees consistently spoke of the adventurous spirit of the four men and their resilience, the attraction of the ocean, and the broader significance of sailing.

Fashion-forward retailer H&M opened its doors at South Bay Galleria, where nearly 300 people were lined up waiting. The two-story H&M store is located across from  on the south side of the mall.

Hermosa Beach

A Long Beach man accused of soliciting sex and sexually assaulting a 'cleaning lady' at his Hermosa Beach workplace was arrested this week. He reportedly previously worked for a Manhattan Beach business. The victim told police and her employer that she was offered money by the suspect for alleged sexual acts.

Local police have reported multiple iPhone thefts in Hermosa Beach recently. The first occurred last Saturday and left one woman injured in the robbery. The second occurred Monday when a man grabbed a woman's iPhone and took off.

Steve Burrell, who left his city manager position in March, was rehired by the Hermosa Beach City Council this week as a consultant to the city. 

Palos Verdes

A man killed after being thrown from his car in a  last Friday in Rancho Palos Verdes was identified this week as Swarndeep Banipal. The 35-year-old Rancho Palos Verdes resident was ejected from his 2010 Range Rover after it hit the road's center divider and then the guardrail while heading west on Palos Verdes Drive West.

: Police spent the week searching for a local woman who was  on Tuesday. She was found Thursday in a South Bay hospital.

: Running enthusiasts from throughout the area convened in Palos Verdes last weekend. An Arizona man won the half marathon, while an L.A. resident came in first in the 5K.

:The treasured battleship USS Iowa is expected to arrive in our area sometime after the Memorial Day holiday. The voyage was stalled due to gale force wind forecasts, a risk to the large-scale towing operation. But most of the beaches in Los Angeles, including several in and around the South Bay, continue to notch poor grades when rainy months are factored into the scores.

: The nonprofit Heal the Bay released its annual beach report card Thursday that shows 82 percent of L.A. beaches earning A or B grades between April and October, a 7-percent improvement over last year.
