This Week's Top News in the South Bay

A rollover crash in Redondo Beach, a grenade scare in Palos Verdes and a centennial celebration in Manhattan Beach are among the items that made the news in the South Bay this past week. Here is a look at those stories and more:

Redondo Beach

: The U.S. Sailing Association announced this week that it has appointed an independent review panel to investigate the crash of the Aegean during the annual Lexus Newport Beach to Ensenada Yacht Race. Pieces of the Aegean and the bodies of three of its crew were found  near the Coronado Islands on April 28. : Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin on Tuesday vetoed the council's plan to have city staff develop language for a citywide advisory vote on whether residents want to oppose the repowering of . AES officials want to replace the aging plant with a new one that they say will run cleaner and provide a backup when renewable power is not available. Anti-power plant groups, on the other hand, say a new plant would spew more toxic emissions and continue to suppress property values.

: A driver was hospitalized late Tuesday after the SUV he was driving rolled over in the 1800 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach. The SUV apparently hit four parked cars before running into a fire hydrant and flipping over. The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

Hermosa Beach

: The City of Hermosa Beach has received a $410,000 grant from the State’s Strategic Growth Council to create a long-term plan toward reducing and eventually eliminating the city’s carbon footprint. The grant will fund a three-year planning effort that will seek to advance the objectives of new California environmental laws SB 375 and AB 32, which seek to reduce greenhouse gases and lower carbon output in the future.

: The daughter of late comedian George Carlin organized a celebration for his 75th birthday at the Hermosa Beach Comedy & Magic Club Thursday night. The event featured appearances by Gary Shandling, Dana Gould and numerous others.

Manhattan Beach

: The city will celebrate its centennial this weekend with a parade down Manhattan Beach Boulevard. Also during the festivities, one family whose roots in MB go back to 1918 will  who have come in from across the U.S.

 The Manhattan Beach-based footwear company agreed this week to pay $40 million to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit over health claims it made regarding its toning footwear such as "Shape-ups." If approved by the court, the proposed settlement will result in cash refunds for each pair of shoes purchased.

Palos Verdes

: A grenade was found Sunday along the Banyan Grove Trail at South Coast Botanic Gardens. The park entrance was closed for almost an hour and a half during the investigation. Grenade scares, while unusual,  recently across the U.S. and around the world.

: The Rancho Palos Verdes Council on Tuesday postponed voting on a set of amendments that would provide more trail access to mountain cyclists in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve. More than 20 residents came out to express their mixed feelings about the proposal.

: A Rancho Palos Verdes man was killed and another critically injured early Friday after their Land Rover hit the center divider on Palos Verdes Drive and then the guardrail while heading west.
