Water Still On Despite Pier Avenue Line Breaks

Some businesses had closed early in anticipation of a service interruption, but workers make quick repairs and no shops or restaurants go without water.

Fearful of not having running water, some Pier Avenue restaurants and stores closed Tuesday afternoon after three water lines broke, a result of the Pier Avenue Improvement Project construction. As it turned out, the lines were quickly repaired and no businesses had to go without water.

The lines were broken because of roadwork on top of an "aging water system, which most water lines are these days," said Tom Marnocha, inspector of the project. "With the weight of equipment and a very fragile water line, it's normal for things like this to happen."

The breaks were located between Valley Drive and Monterey Boulevard. Workers from the California Water Service Co.'s Rancho Dominguez district quickly tended to the problem, according to the Public Works Department.

"We anticipated turning the water off, notifying businesses and people about the breakage, but the department did such a great job in such a fast amount of time that no one went without water this afternoon," Marnocha said.

Pier Avenue shops, restaurants and the library will return to normal business hours Wednesday.
