Week in Review: AVP and World Series

Patch celebrates the launch of its 100th local news website this week.

The AVP cancels the rest of its summer season, and we learn about the origins of Hermosa's nightlife scene.

As the result of battling financial troubles, the AVP canceled the rest of its summer season this week, which includes the Manhattan Beach Open and the Hermosa Beach Invitational next month. Many players, who view the AVP as one of the few professional outlets for beach volleyball athletes in the U.S., see this change in the season as a huge loss for the sport.

Patch Media launched its 100th local news website Tuesday in Morristown, N.J. Most of the Patch sites are clustered along the East and West coasts, and all of them are in cities with fewer than 100,000 people. Patch is proud to have Hermosa Beach on its list.

STAR report

Results of the state's 2010 Standardized Testing and Reporting program were released Monday, showing overall improved scores for local students in English-language arts, math, science and history-social science. Hermosa Beach schools' test results can be viewed on the California Department of Education website.

Tea party

The South Bay Tea Party spent the week preparing for a convention Sunday in Redondo Beach. One of the group's leaders said the gathering would focus on fiscal responsibility and transit funds.

Hermosa's drinking problem

As Patch continues its exploration into the history of local liquor policy, we found out that Hermosa's nightlife scene developed around the same time as the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control in the late 1950s. Between 1955 and 2009, the number of liquor licenses in the city more than doubled.

World Series

The Maine District 3 champions from Bangor defeated the Manhattan Beach Senior League All-Stars 9-3 in the World Series semifinals Friday.

"This has been a great experience for us, and I told the boys there's nothing to hang their heads about," said Manhattan Beach manager Carlos Rojas, who saw his team's 19-game winning streak come to an end.
