Week in Review: City Grants Awards and Rejects Late-Night Drinking

A local seventh-grader starts his own beachside business, and the AVP Tournament kicks off along The Strand.

Honoring History

Mayor Michael DiVirgilio awarded the Walk in History 1900-1919 fundraiser committee with a certificate of recognition Tuesday. The group was honored for presenting local history and culture to the community, while raising money for the city's 10-murals-in-10-years project.

Drinks End at Ten

City Council rejected the idea of allowing local restaurants that serve only beer and wine to stay open until 11 p.m. with a 3-2 vote. The city decided that new and existing establishments should continue closing doors at 10 p.m.

Tea with the NAACP

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People passed a resolution at its annual conference Wednesday asking the Tea Party to repudiate the alleged use of racial epithets and anti-gay slurs at its public rallies. South Bay Tea Party leader Nathan Mintz immediately responded, arguing that the party has a "zero tolerance" policy on racism.

The Strand Stand

For a second year, Hermosa Valley School seventh-grader Riley Drockton opened a beachside beverage stand near 8th Street to raise money for his family's summer vacation. The young businessman said that he has made as much as $100 in just one week as a vendor, and independently organized a partnership with the Lotus Yogurt Bar on Hermosa Avenue.

AVP in Hermosa

The best in beach volleyball competed Friday to qualify for the AVP Hermosa Beach Open's main draw competition Saturday, and the finals Sunday. Women's duo April Ross and Jennifer Kessy advanced in hopes of capturing their fourth consecutive tournament win. Longtime team Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser advanced in the men's division, seeking their fifth tournament title in a row.
