Week in Review: City Welcomes Mayor, Whales

Tucker Takes Over

The City Council appointed Peter Tucker as mayor as Michael DiVirgilio's tenure came to an end Tuesday. Tucker served as mayor in 2006, and said that he's happy to do so again. Howard Fishman was appointed mayor pro tem.

Council members voted 5-0 on Tuesday in favor of having staff start to work with the L.A. County and South Bay bicycle coalitions on the South Bay Regional Bicycle Master Plan. Councilman Jeff Duclos was also appointed to join the effort's Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee.

Whale of a Tale

Blue whales are taking advantage of unusually cold water temperatures near the Santa Monica Bay as they migrate south to the waters off Mexico to breed. There are about 20 to 30 whales that have been traveling near Hermosa in Redondo Canyon, according to scientists.

Behavior Bylaws

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve bylaws regarding rules and regulations of temporary advisory committees, such as the PCH-Aviation Committee and the Green Task Force. These new bylaws require that committee members act respectfully to one another.

Yom Kippur

The South Bay's Jewish community observed Yom Kippur this weekend. The Day of Atonement includes fasting for 25 hours. Services were held at Temple Shalom on Monterey Boulevard.
