Week in Review: Economy and Schools

The Hermosa Beach City Council and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors both hold meetings—and locals talk to Patch on video about the economy. Here is a roundup of the week's news.

South Bay residents weighed in on the U.S. economy this week, and the Hermosa Beach City Council agreed to phase in South Park changes and a pilot community garden program.

County redistricting proposals

Clashes over two proposed redistricting plans continued . One plan would move 3.4 million residents into different districts and create two Latino-majority districts. The other, supported by Fourth District Supervisor Don Knabe (whose district includes Hermosa Beach) would shift “only about 150,000 residents countywide… [into] a new Supervisorial District,” .

Park improvements, garden

The Hermosa Beach City Council in a meeting Tuesday night proposed South Park renovations as well as allow a temporary community garden to grow near the old roller hockey rink in the park. The Parks and Recreation Commission recommended last week that a county grant be allocated to park improvements and the garden serve as a pilot program. 

Thoughts on the economy

Beach Cities residents and visitors talked to Patch about the Standard & Poor's credit rating for the country and the Dow, raising the question, is the U.S. in a double-dip recession? 

School ratings

The California Department of Education on Thursday for schools across the state. Mira Costa High School’s class of 2010 had a 3.5 percent dropout rate over four years while Redondo Union’s class saw a 3.2 percent dropout rate.
