Week in Review: Fire, Fighting and Firearms

Hermosa Beach prepares to host students and chaperones visiting from sister city Loreto, Mexico, while it also recovers from the Fourth of July.

Just in case you missed Patch's coverage this week, here is an overview of some of the latest news in Hermosa Beach.

Restaurant Fire

Union Cattle Company reopened Monday after a small kitchen fire broke out Saturday. No one was injured and little damage was caused, but firefighters from the three beach cities — Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach — worked together to put out the fire.

July Fourth Brawls

As tourists and locals crowded town in celebration of the holiday, one man was rushed to the hospital and another violently attacked on Pier Avenue. Police were able to arrest another man who hit someone over the head with a skateboard.

No Guns Allowed

Police released a map of places in the city where unloaded firearms are restricted, despite open carry law. This map was created in preparation for a Saturday pro-gun event. Nearly half of the city is restricted due to school zones, government buildings, public parks and the local post office.

101-year Church

St. Cross by-the-sea Episcopal Church celebrated 101 years in Hermosa Beach Thursday. Even though the church held services for 104 years, the building was the first religious institution constructed in the city in 1909. Today, the church congregation includes more than 1,000 members.

Sister City Woes

As the city prepares to host 40 middle school students and parent chaperones from Loreto, activities on the visitors' agenda had to be scaled back, and some were even deleted, due to financial constraints. The Hermosa Beach Sister City Association is inviting local volunteers to help with this upcoming student exchange program.
