Week in Review: Graduation, 'Granny'

The Hermosa Beach community remembers surf photographer LeRoy "Granny" Grannis in a paddle-out memorial.

Mira Costa High School seniors graduate, motorists are reminded of the upcoming massive 405 closure and a paddle-out ceremony is held in memory of legendary surf photographer LeRoy Grannis.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that predicts thousands of businesses and millions of employees in Southern California would be affected if a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the San Andreas fault. Local business owners are urged to prepare safety measures and utilities in case disaster strikes.

Black Kelp Flies

An infestation of black kelp flies has been a nuisance for people trying to enjoy South Bay beaches—Patch Wednesday about the swarms of flies. "I won't be going back to the beach soon because of them," said Hermosa Beach resident Bianca Ecklund.

Costa Commencement

The Mira Costa High School Class of 2011 graduated Thursday night in a ceremony held at the school on Waller Field. Ninety percent of Mira Costa grads are college bound, said Principal Ben Dale. Patch published  of some of the school year's events.

Grannis Paddle-out

The surf community remembered surf photographer LeRoy "Granny" Grannis in a along Hermosa Beach's shoreline. Grannis died in February and is renowned for his work. “He was a surfer taking pictures of surfing,” said Steve Pezman, Surfer Magazine's former deputy editor. “He loved watching the joy surfers got out of seeing themselves captured on film and I think it served to motivate him to continually push the limits of his photography.”
