Week in Review: Macpherson Oil, Mural, Oscar

Patch asks Hermosa residents what they think of the Macpherson Oil lawsuit against the city, and who they hope will win an Academy Award on Sunday.

Marley's Mutts

Hermosa native Zach Skow, who once battled alcoholism, found relief in . A pup who Skow's family adopted helped him overcome the disease. Skow launched the nonprofit Marley's Mutts to help other dogs in need. Skow's efforts were featured in the March 2011 issue of O magazine.

Macpherson Trial

The will go to trial next year on Jan. 18, 2012, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge decided Tuesday. Macpherson is seeking about $700 million in damages. Patch what they think of the lawsuit and oil drilling in general.

Big Wave Challenge

The new South Bay Boardriders Club is now seeking entries in its first annual , which will honor a wave rider who is documented on video or in a photo paddling into the biggest local surf out of all contestants (see accompanying video under photo). The deadline for challenge applicants is March 31.

Lifeguard Towers Mural

Volunteers have compiled the city's remaining Summer of Color lifeguard tower panels t. The mural was built Thursday and commemorates the painted lifeguard panels that once adorned the local beach (see accompanying video under photo). The Summer of Color was the biggest U.S. public art project to date.

Academy Awards

The 83rd annual Academy Awards air Sunday at 5 p.m. on ABC. Who do you think will take home the gold and which films do you think will be honored? .
