Oil is a natural occurrence, experts say, but is increasing. "This has been kind of continuing to increase," Cindy Reyes, executive director of the California Wildlife Center, told Patch. "These birds coming in spend most of their time on the surface of the water, floating around, and that’s where the oil is."

Ex-teacher accused of lewd acts

Mark Berndt, 61, , was taken into custody Monday. A neighbor told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday that he saw the Torrance-based former teacher riding a tandem bicycle with a young girl in Hermosa Beach.

Trimming trees now could affect wildlife

As spring approaches, , according to the California Wildlife Center. Experts encourage pruning and trimming trees in October through early January, when trees are dormant.

Abigaile to open
