Week in Review: Quakes, Demos, PCH, and Surf

City officials look ahead at a possible cluster of small earthquakes, pro-gun demonstration, revamped PCH, and sky-high surf.

Future Earthquakes

Swarms of small earthquakes hitting Hermosa Beach is common, said Kate Hutton, staff seismologist for California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. She said last week that more earthquake clusters are expected this summer, and will be centered offshore within the Palos Verdes fault zone.

Gun Law Debate

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that small-town municipalities and states must abide by the Second Amendment. South Bay Open Carry founder Harley Green, Hermosa Beach police Chief Greg Savelli, and the Brady Campaign Los Angeles chapter president Suzanne Verge presented their individual viewpoints on local gun-control rules and regulations in a series of exclusive interviews.

PCH Mission

The PCH and Aviation Improvement Committee adopted a mission statement on Thursday to enhance the aesthetics and economic well-being of the transit corridors. Yunus Ghausi of the California Department of Transportation addressed the group, offering specifics about the state's responsibilities for PCH.

Independence Day

Hermosa Beach prepared for a Fourth of July that included advisories against fireworks and ocean surf. Officials reinforced the ban on possessing, using and discharging fireworks in the city with local signs and notices. Additionally, The National Weather Service warned that dangerous surf swells and rip currents will debut at the beach on Sunday, lasting until Tuesday.
