As Sunday marked the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Hermosa Beach residents gathered at the 9/11 memorial park on Pier Avenue to remember the lives lost on that day.

Blue whales in the Beach Cities

A pod of about one mile off of neighboring Redondo Beach's King Harbor on Monday. There are about 8,000 to 9,000 blue whales in the oceans, and they are considered an endangered species.

New Coastal Commission executive director

The California Coastal Commission on Thursday to serve as executive director, helping to oversee coastal development in the state. Lester is replacing Peter Douglas, who resigned in August.

Landlords and smoking decision

Gov. Jerry Brown this week giving California landlords the authority to prohibit smoking in rental units. More than half of Hermosa Beach residents live in rented property, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The new state law goes into effect Jan. 1.

Library launches teen section

The Hermosa Beach Public Library on Thursday unveiled its . The section includes books, magazines and board games for local teenagers.

9/11 memorial park

A new memorial containing a piece of steel from ruins of the World Trade Center was displayed at Hermosa Beach's 9/11 . Community leaders and emergency responders rededicated the bench and showcased the new World Trade Center memorial structure.
