Team Patrick Molloys won the women's 18-and-over bracket at the fourth annual Kim Blankinship Memorial Volleyball Tournament. North Mania won the women's under-18 bracket. The two teams captured their first championships at the tournament in honor of the late Blankinship, a former multi-sport athlete.

A Hermosa Beach father became a local hero after he helped beachgoers and lifeguards pull a boy from under several feet of sand in Manhattan Beach. The 11-year-old boy was digging a tunnel that collapsed around him.

Michael Scott Moore traveled the world in search of surf culture's origins and discovering its worldwide reach. The South Bay author talked about his quest chronicled in his new book "Sweetness and Blood."

City Spends and Saves

City Council voted unanimously to tighten worker pensions this fiscal year in an attempt to save the city money. However, the council also voted unanimously to help fund the Beach Cities Transit Line 109 for another two years, despite concerns over cost and service.

Jack's Surf

Jack's Surfboards debuted this weekend on Pacific Coast Highway. Local surfers flocked to the store for its grand opening event, despite concerns that the big commercial franchise will take away business from smaller surf shops in town.
