Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser won the men's final at the AVP Hermosa Beach Open last weekend. The duo has set a record in its total number of 54 victories in AVP tournaments. For the women, Jen Kessy and April Ross emerged victorious, defeating Elaine Youngs and Rachel Scott.

Cancer survivor and longtime Hermosa Beach resident Adrienne Slaughter served as the featured speaker at the American Cancer Society's 12th annual South Bay Relay for Life last weekend. She recalled a lifelong battle with the disease.

Construction Scare

A water line broke during construction for the Pier Avenue Improvement Project on Tuesday. The Public Works Department addressed the emergency quickly and avoided having to turn off the water for surrounding restaurants and shops.

Seaside Shakespeare

Shakespeare-by-the-Sea performed Julius Caesar on Wednesday night and Twelfth Night on Thursday in Valley Park. The 11-year-old touring troupe has continued to offer free summer shows across the South Bay annually despite financial challenges.

Jack's Surf

Jack's Surfboards will be opening next weekend on Pacific Coast Highway. Local surfers have created a Facebook page rallying against the new store, which they view as a big commercial franchise that will take away business from smaller surf shops in town.
