Tsunami scare in Hermosa

Just hours following a devastating, monster earthquake in Japan in March, authorities issued for California's coastal areas. Patch not only kept readers up-to-date as advisories were being issued early that day, but also was first to report the Hermosa Beach Police Department's response to the issue.

Domestic quarrel backs traffic

The day after a , Hermosa Beach residents called Patch to find out what exactly happened. We became first to report that a violent domestic dispute was the cause of traffic woes. The quarrel poured into the street, even causing some passersby to get involved before police arrived.

Styrofoam containers kicked out

Just hours after the Hermosa Beach City Council in October decided 3-2 to , Patch was the first media outlet to notify the community. At the time, Councilmen Michael DiVirgilio and Kit Bobko argued that an overall ban was too drastic for business owners, but the rest of the council pointed out that no local restaurateurs had publicly opposed the idea.

Seaside power outage

The South Bay was one of the hardest hit areas during a in November. Strong winds that swept Los Angeles County left more than 8,000 residents of the South Bay in the dark. Patch was one of few media outlets keeping locals up-to-date with expanded information on the outage while it was happening.
