"Tear Down This Power Plant" - Rally

The Plant is "the major blighting influence in the area due to the size of the site, the visual impact of the use on surrounding area and the undesirable environmental impacts on the use that effect the public health, safety and welfare."
Redondo Beach Staff Report, 2004

  • Did you know that the AES Power Plant rarely operates (less than 10% of its capacity a year) and is shut down for months at a time?
  • Did you know that other outdated coastal Power Plants in California are being decommissioned and removed to allow for more appropriate uses?
  • Did you know that Redondo Beach has the power under State Law to phase-out the plant and require more appropriate uses for this densely populated area?

This eyesore has ruined our waterfront long enough.  It depresses our property values, pollutes our air, blocks our views, harms our local economy, compromises our health and diminishes our overall quality of life.

The plant is outdated, and AES wants to build a new one and add a large desalination plant on the same land.  New plants will not be allowed to use ocean water to cool them, so residents may be exposed to the noise and visual disturbance of cooling towers/big fans in addition to stacks that emit dangerous air pollutants into in our backyards.

With resident support, two Power Plants have been removed in San Francisco, and other coastal communities are doing the same.  The Redondo Beach Staff Report also recommended this 6 years ago.  Review report by going to: http://laserweb.redondo.org/WebLink/DocView.aspx?id=59711&dbid=0

Despite the staff recommendation, the City of Redondo Beach has done nothing to explore zoning changes in the area.  We need to get them on board.  Come help make history and rally with your fellow South Bay residents to signal to our State agencies and Government representatives to "Tear Down this Plant!"

Please join us for an important rally to demonstrate our voice as citizens! We need a large turnout, and would really appreciate your support!
