Good News for California and our Schools

Dear Friends,

After years of budget cuts and dysfunction, California is back.

Governor Brown presented his 2014-2015 State Budget proposal that increases funding for K-12, community colleges, and the University of California and California State University system, while freezing college tuition and increasing student financial aid. The Governor is also proposing to set aside a $2.3 billion reserve, including a $1.6 billion rainy day fund.

As the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education, I will fight to continue restoring funds for our schools, community colleges, and universities, so that we can invest in our children and our future workforce. At the same time, as a former South Bay school board member during the Great Recession, I also know that we need to be fiscally prudent and save for the inevitable rainy day.

The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst proclaimed, "California has made substantial progress in recent years in addressing its prior, persistent state budgetary problems." But there is still much to be done. I have outlined my budget priorities in an editorial published by the Daily Breeze that you can read here.
