Busy Memorial Day Weekend For Police

Hermosa Beach's 1.3 square miles were filled to the brim Memorial Day weekend, said Interim Police Chief Mike McCrary Thursday. His department made 52 arrests and fielded 511 calls for service during the three-day weekend that included the popular Fiesta Hermosa event.

McCrary, who worked all three days as did his staff, said his officers told him "if there is a maximum [capacity the city could hold], we were close to it."

HBPD made the following arrests: 24 DUIs--12 at a DUI checkpoint [as previously reported: DUI Arrestee Hits Power Pole]  and 12 by a saturation patrol; 12 for public intoxication; 6 for urinating in public and 3 for felonies.

The police department's assessment of the Memorial Day weekend crowd is in line with the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce's estimation of 150,000 at Fiesta Hermosa, up about 10,000 from the previous year.

Both McCrary and the chamber's Matt Bennett said Monday was the busiest day of all.

McCrary said that while it was busy things went well from a police perspective. "We want visitors to come here," he said. "We want them to behave when they're here."
