The on Friday encouraged locals via Facebook to remember to lock their vehicle doors, even if simply going in and out of the house.

Police this month have seen an increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles, according to the online message, which added "remember not to leave anything of value in plain view—crooks are less likely to break a window and cause all that noise unless they know there is something of value to steal."

Insurance company Nationwide has offered these 10 tips to avoid a car break-in:

  1. Keep your car visible by parking in well-lit areas.
  2. Don’t make it easy. Lock doors and close windows.
  3. Activate your vehicle’s alarm system.
  4. Hide any valuables in your car.
  5. If you drive a SUV with an open cargo area, get a retractable fitted cover to hide items.
  6. Always keep your keys with you. If you think you have a great hiding place for a spare key, car break-in thieves know to look above the visor, in the center console, and other places.
  7. Stow your stuff before you drive. Some thieves stake out parking lots to watch where people hide items.
  8. Hide electronic accessories.
  9. Trust your instincts. If you see suspicious activity, find another spot to park.
  10. Many vehicles are broken into with the intent of stealing the vehicle itself. Visible anti-theft devices, like steering wheel locks, may discourage someone from breaking in.
