Child Car Seat Inspections at 'Coffee With a Cop'

Two HBPD officers will be on hand to make sure child car seats have been properly installed and to answer questions about law enforcement.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department is holding "Coffee With a Cop" Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. at Java Man, 157 Pier Avenue.

Lieutenant Tom Thompson and an HBPD traffic officer will answer law enforcement-related questions and conduct child car seat inspections.

Interim Police Chief Steve Johnson told Patch that department personnel routinely install children's car seats as well as inspect them for safety and make necessary adjustments. Residents simply need to come to the police department at 540 Pier Avenue.

"We want them [child car seats] installed properly," he said, saying the mother of newborn twins had stopped in recently because she thought her children's car seats had not been installed properly.

The mom was right, telling the officer when installation corrections were made, "'I feel so much better.'"

Johnson said staff can also tell residents if a car seat is old and doesn't meet current standards.

Residents can stop in Monday through Friday during normal business hours, said Johnson, to ask for a car seat inspection.
