DUI Arrestee Hits Power Pole

A driver attempting to avoid a DUI checkpoint hit a power pole and fire hydrant on Pacific Coast Hwy. just south of Artesia Blvd., resulting in a downed pole and lines and a water geyser from a severed fire hydrant, said Sgt. Robert Higgins of the Hermosa Beach Police Department. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

The DUI checkpoint, held from Saturday night into Sunday morning, resulted in 12 drunken driving arrests and 4 suspended/unlicensed driver arrests, he said.

The Drunk Driving and Driver’s License Checkpoint, funded through the Avoid the 100 program via the California Office of Traffic Safety, was set up on Artesia Blvd. just west of Prospect. Officers from the Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance, Hawthorne, Gardena and Inglewood Police departments worked the checkpoint as did officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department.

There were no injuries reported in the single-vehicle collision on PCH in front of Spyder Surf.
