Gun Scare Forces RUHS Evacuation

Police evacuate the building after getting reports of a gun on campus.

About 200 students were evacuated from the science building at  on Thursday as police searched for a reported gun, said Redondo Beach police Sgt. Phil Keenan.

No gun was found, he said.

Earlier Thursday, a faculty member thought an 18-year-old student was carrying the weapon, Keenan said. Police received the call shortly before 1 p.m.

"[The faculty member] called police," Keenan said. "We believe [the student] had gone out to the science building."

Officers detained the student for questioning.

Students with classes in the science building were back in class by 2:30 p.m., Keenan said. Students in other buildings were not affected by the evacuation.

Police did arrest another 18-year-old student on battery charges in connection with an earlier, unrelated event, Keenan said.
