Hermosa Beach Jail Runs Out of Room on July 4 After Alcohol Ordinance Crackdown

At least two inmates are sent to the Manhattan Beach jail because Hermosa runs out of room, police say.

Hermosa Beach police enforced a new smoking ban on July 4 in the Plaza and on the Strand and "was more stringent this year than in years past" in enforcing existing alcohol ordinances, said Sgt. Kevin Averill. 

The crackdown led to nine arrests from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 22 alleged violators were booked into the jail between 6 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. today, Averill said.

"By far, most are alcohol-related, drunk in public, " he said. "There were some fights and a DUI."

"There were also a lot of citations issued," he said.
