Drop off Prescription Drugs on 'Take Back Day'

Hermosa Beach residents can dispose of unused prescription drugs at the Hermosa fire station on Saturday.

Hermosa Beach residents can take their unused and unwanted prescription drugs to the Hermosa Beach fire station Saturday as part of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Those who want to drop off prescription drugs can visit the station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The day is meant to address "a vital public safety and public health issue," according to the Take Back website.

More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The Partnership for a Drug Free America said each day, about 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.
