Look Out for These Speed Traps

Although fewer drivers in Hermosa Beach are getting traffic tickets these days, the local police still have their favorite spots for catching speeding motorists.

The Hermosa Beach Police Department saw a significant drop in the number of traffic citations issued last year, according to its 10-year report (see accompanying report under photo). Only 1,788 traffic citations were issued in 2010, compared to 3,217 in 2009.

With , Hermosa drivers are likely to continue being more cautious on the local roads.  

To deter those who might be tempted to exceed the speed limit, Patch has compiled a list of speed trap locations in Hermosa and surrounding areas, using The National Speed Trap Exchange as a starting point.

The following are places where we have been issued a ticket, or know someone who has received a ticket, or have seen an officer waiting with a radar gun. (A word to the wise: Watch those hills.)

Hermosa Beach 

Artesia Boulevard where PCH turns into Sepulveda Boulevard. Officers patrol in various places, including the Albertson’s parking lot, looking for speeders.

Manhattan Beach 

Heading east on Marine Avenue near Peck Avenue, which is a 35-mph zone, officers often monitor the bottom of the hill.

Redondo Beach

Heading west on 190th Street toward Prospect Avenue, the speed limit is 35 mph, but because of the hill, cars tend to speed. Officers often monitor traffic from the parking lot before Prospect on the right-hand side of the street. Plus, on Palos Verdes Boulevard between Prospect and Sepulveda Boulevard, motorcycle officers check car speeds with radar guns. 

Rancho Palos Verdes

Heading south on Hawthorne Boulevard near Palos Verdes Drive West, police use their radar gun to catch motorists speeding toward the coast.
