Man Arrested After Drawing Fake Gun

The Lawndale resident is in police custody after the early morning incident.

Police arrested a man who brandished a replica gun when the officers arrived on the scene of an argument on the 1300 block of Hermosa Avenue early Friday, officers said.

Shane Daniel Olswang, 22, of Lawndale was allegedly arguing with the group of people about a woman.

When officers arrived to address the incident around 2 a.m., Olswang pulled a replica Beretta pistol from his waistband, racked the slide back, and held it threateningly in front of someone standing in the crowd.

Berettas are commonly carried by police and military. The orange safety tip of Olswang's replica was painted black to appear real, police said.

After several tense moments, Olswang put the gun away and was arrested. If he didn't cooperate and overtly pointed the gun at the startled crowd, the incident could have turned deadly, according to police.

The suspect is being held in police custody, with a bail set at $15,000. He will be arraigned at the Torrance Court House on Sept. 28.

Anyone with more information regarding the incident is encouraged to call Det. Raul Saldana at 310-318-0351.
