Man Has Seizure During Massage

Paramedics respond to the call from a Pacific Coast Highway parlor but the man recovers and does not need to be taken to the hospital.

Paramedics were called to the Just Massage Studio on Pacific Coast Highway for a medical emergency Sunday. Neighboring merchants and shoppers watched from the doorways of nearby stores as the emergency crew arrived on the scene about 2 p.m.

"They came out with a gurney, nobody was on it though, and then two police came," said Brian Smith of Triangle Hardware, located next door to the massage parlor.

Marcia Carus, who owns the studio, said that a man had a seizure during a massage. Alarmed when the client began to shake violently, the masseuse immediately called paramedics.

"He's a regular client and we knew about his history with epilepsy, because of medical charts, but this has never happened before," Carus said.

Firefighter Capt. Brian Scott said that the man eventually recovered from the seizure and was not taken to the hospital. Carus added that the client plans to continue booking appointments with her team.

The massage studio opened on Pacific Coast Highway four years ago and offers Swedish, sports, deep tissue, pregnancy and Thai massages, as well as reflexogy services and Shiatsu, a technique that applies deep pressure on specific points of the body. Carus did not say what type of massage the man was having when he had his seizure, but said she's proud her employee responded promptly.
