Man's Best Friend Is Drug Dealers' Worst Enemy

Keef, a black Labrador, helps Hermosa police officers detect narcotics.

Dogs have long been allies in law enforcement's drug searches, and it's no different in Hermosa Beach with Keef, the police department's young black Labrador. With monthly trainings, the friendly pup uses his acute sense of smell to detect narcotics, such as marijuana or cocaine, under feet of rubble or within packed-tight containers.

When an illegal drug is found, Keef notifies officers with an active alert by scratching his paws against the area where the drug is hidden. Using his nose, Keef once helped Officer George Brunn and detectives uncover 200 pounds of marijuana in a van from Mexico. When not patrolling the streets, Keef lives with Brunn and his family.

"He's a good dog," Brunn said.
