National Preparedness Month is Now

In wake of the upcoming anniversary of Sept. 11, public safety officials remind residents in the L.A. region that September is National Preparedness Month.

With the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks approaching, Los Angeles authorities this week reminded area residents about the importance of emergency preparedness.

"September is National Preparedness Month, which was founded after 9/11 to increase preparedness in the United States," said Erik Scott, the Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, on Thursday.

He said that residents in the Los Angeles region should not only remember the Americans who died in the Sept. 11 attacks, but also use the anniversary to prepare for future emergencies.

  • Put together an emergency kit of supplies, including water, non-perishable food, first aid materials, prescription medications, a flashlight, and a battery-powered radio. The supplies should be enough for yourself and anyone who is in your care or household.
  • Make an emergency plan with your family and your neighbors.
  • Sign up for alert messaging or notices from federal, state and local authorities.

"Fire, police and rescue personnel may not always be able to reach you quickly... and the most important step you can take in helping us is being able to take care of yourself and those in your care," Scott said. "The more people who are prepared, the quicker the community will recover."
