Police Log: A Jewel Heist and Scattered Credit Card Abuse

A cat burglar, an ex-girlfriend, a phone thief and a store clerk are suspected.

March 24 — Sliding Door Aids Stealthy Daytime Thief:

A burglar reportedly broke into a home on 15th Street and took a white gold wedding ring, other jewelry, a driver's license, money clip and credit card. One of the residents of the house was home at the time and told police he heard someone enter through a sliding glass door on the home's lower level and thought it was his wife returning from the gym. From his second floor balcony he saw that the sliding glass door was open and that his wife was not home yet. Neighbors were unaware of any suspicious activity. Officers were unable to find any fingerprints that would be useful to the case at the house.

A man reported an unauthorized charge on his credit card for $2,001.36. He learned from the card's financial fraud department that the charge covered three months of car payments on a Mercedes Benz C350, the model of his ex-girlfriend's car. The credit card owner told police he is certain the charge was made by his ex-girlfriend, whom he said used his card without his permission. 

March 20 — $400 in Attempted Drugstore Charges:

A woman was alerted by her credit card company that someone tried to charge $400 on her credit card at a CVS in Aliso Viejo on March 18. The victim had last used her card on March 17 at the CVS on Pacific Coast Highway and Second Street in Hermosa Beach. An officer reviewed the security tape at the Hermosa Beach CVS to look for suspicious activity during the victim's transaction, but saw no indication of foul play. 

March 19 — Mystery Thief Charges Blackberrys:

A man reported to police that someone charged a total of $1,986.53 to his credit card for five Blackberry Curve cellphones and  T-Mobile service. The victim  signed an affidavit with T-Mobile stating that he never opened the account. An investigation by his credit card company showed that the phones Fed-Exed to his home. It's assumed that the phones were taken by someone that was awaiting their arrival.
