Seven Arrested at Artesia Boulevard DUI Checkpoint

A police checkpoint results in seven arrests and more than a dozen citations and vehicle impounds Saturday evening and early Sunday morning.

Police officers made seven DUI arrests, cited 13 unlicensed drivers and impounded 20 vehicles at a sobriety checkpoint on Artesia Boulevard over the weekend, City Councilman Jeff Duclos said at a meeting Tuesday.

The drunk drivers arrested could face fines and penalties of up to $10,000 and loss of driving privileges for up to a year, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"I hate to characterize it as a success, but it speaks to something that we're obviously all concerned about and want to take the opportunity to urge people not to drive and drink," Duclos said.

Officers and local volunteers in police service (VIPS) set up the checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., monitoring traffic moving eastbound, near Pacific Coast Highway.

Patrol reports that the number of DUI citations often increases during the summer months of June, July, and August, which also serves as a time when the police department needs more volunteer assistance.

"We're fortunate that we have a good program and we have a great department protecting the public's interest in this matter," Duclos said.

The weekend checkpoint was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, which will fund more checkpoints and roving patrols throughout the South Bay this summer.
