5 Potential Candidates for City Council Pull Papers

Five Hermosa Beach residents are taking the first step in their potential bids for a seat on City Council, according to the city clerk's office.

Carolyn J. Petty, Nanette Barragan, Gregory J. Savelli, H.S. Fangary and current Mayor Patrick “Kit” Bobko stopped by city hall earlier this week to pick up, aka "pull," the necessary documents and forms they must complete and submit in order to run for office.

Three City Council seats are available in the November election. Those seats currently belong to Bobko and councilmen Jeff Duclos and Howard Fishman. At a recent council meeting, Fishman said he would not run in November.

Duclos and Bokbo told Patch they will seek re-election, as did former Chief of Police Greg Savelli.

Barragan, Petty and Fangary along with Duclos, Bobko and Savelli have until Friday, Aug. 9 at 5 p.m. to return their completed paperwork to the city clerk. Once a candidate submits the necessary paperwork, the county registrar's office confirms the eligibility of each candidate in terms of citizenship, city of residence and related matters.

The municipal election is set for Nov. 5. Each elected council member's term is four years.
The city treasurer's position is up for election, as well, for a two-year term. Hermosa Beach resident David Cohn resigned from the slot on May 15 after surviving calls for his ouster when knowledge of behavior some deemed risky to city business became public. Cohn's resignation came after 18 months in office. An extortion attempt against him that began in October came to a legal end in February when his alleged extortionists were sentenced for the crime. Cohn was elected to offive by 56 percent of the vote, defeating then incumbent John Workman, who died a few days after the election, in November 2011. Workman had been in office since 1993.

Until a new treasurer is elected, the city's finance department is handling the treasurer's duties.
