Beach Cities See Low Turnout for Special Election

Voters appear in small numbers Tuesday to fill a vacancy in the state Senate's 28th District, which includes Hermosa Beach. Polls close at 8 p.m.

A single-item ballot and rainy afternoon yielded a small voter turnout for Tuesday's special election to fill the late Sen. Jenny Oropeza's seat in the state Senate's 28th District, which includes Hermosa Beach.

Local polls remained quiet with more staffers present than voters. The rush of voters submitting ballots before work and during lunch hours never came, said several poll workers.

One voter who asked to not be identified complained about tax dollars being wasted on the special election. , she asked.

Patch spent four hours Tuesday approaching a total of 13 people across four polling locations in the Beach Cities to ask them who they voted for and why. Three agreed to share their decisions on video.

The candidates for the 28th District are:

    •    Martha Flores Gibson, Republican
    •    James P. Thompson, Republican
    •    Mark Lipman, Nonpartisan
    •    Ted W. Lieu, Democrat
    •    Bob Valentine, Republican
    •    Kevin Thomas McGurk, Democrat
    •    Michael Chamness, Nonpartisan
    •    Jeffrey E. Fortini, Republican
