City Unveils New Parking Permit Design

A sunset image of volleyball players on the beach, with a bicycle sitting on the sand, has been selected to appear on next year’s city-issued parking permits.

The design by local network engineer Randy Mayuga won the city’s second annual parking permit contest, the announced Tuesday.

"We chose Mr. Mayuga’s design from among several worthy contenders because it is an attractive illustration of the beach lifestyle that is part of what makes our city such a great place to live and work," said Mayor Howard Fishman in a statement Tuesday. "We created this contest to honor and inspire local artists, and we extend our congratulations to Mr. Mayuga for submitting the winning design. We look forward to seeing it displayed in vehicles over the next year."

The city received 11 submissions in the design contest. Last year's was an image of local surfer Tom Graner paddling through ocean waves.

Mayuga, a Toyota network engineer, created this year's design on his computer using Adobe Photoshop because it "looked like a fun thing to do and a great way to express myself creatively," he said.

The design "basically describes my summer—biking to the Pier to play volleyball. Besides, volleyball is a big part of Hermosa's thing along with biking, sunsets and sand."

The new parking permits will be available for purchase either at City Hall or online beginning Feb. 6. The permits cost $40 each for residents and $143 each for employees of local businesses. Residents and employees also are encouraged to renew their permits by mail.

Permits allow local business employees and residents living near downtown to park their vehicles at any yellow-posted meter without having to pay as well as in the one-hour street parking zones without having to follow the time limit.
