Hermosa Beach Loses Lead in Water Challenge

Vernon moves up to 1st Place, surpassing Hermosa, in the monthlong regional competition that promotes water conservation.

The industrial city of Vernon quickly moved up in the Wyland Foundation's Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation, taking away Hermosa Beach's stance as frontrunner.

For two weeks, Hermosa Beach led the regional challenge and neighboring Redondo Beach was previously ranked as No. 2. Vernon jumped to No.1 this week, pushing Hermosa to No. 2 and Redondo to No.3.

The competition ranks cities based on the highest percentage of residents who take the online Water Challenge pledge to conserve water and reduce waste by practicing earth-friendly habits, such as composting or taking shorter showers.
