City Sets Smoking Ban Implementation Plan

The Hermosa Beach City Council approves the smoking ban implementation program, which goes into effect March 1.

Smoking in several outdoor places around Hermosa Beach , starting March 1.

The areas include Pier Plaza, the Strand, the greenbelt, outdoor dining places and city parking lots.

The Hermosa Beach City Council decided 4-1 in a meeting Tuesday night to share news of the smoking prohibition with community members through a public information program, funded by the county.

"Healthy Air Hermosa" regulatory signs will be placed around town as well as some coasters, posters and banners (see accompanying city staff report under photo.)

Councilman Kit Bobko cast the dissenting vote in the decision. He has publicly opposed the smoking ban since it was proposed last year, , "so Orwellian that I think Orwell would be offended by it."

I bet Patch didn't have to look long to find the discarded butt on the beach.

Hermosa Beach has a Pleasure Police problem! This is a cool fun city. Everyone knows this. I don't smoke cigarettes, but it is just part of the cool vibe there is here. It is just sad what is happening here by the "do gooders".

Yep - the do gooders are just never happy. This was just bully politics by lame council members that cowed to the noise of a select and tiny few do gooders just so that they can shove their fascist ideas down everyone's throats!. It gave Pete Tucker a chance to pontificate on how bad smoking is and to cast his holier than thou vote to protect us all from ourselves. Next, they'll concentrate more fully on getting the drinkers out and then fat people.... On the weekends they turn Pier Plaza into a prison yard with police vehicles in the walking area and cops making themselves very present and intimidating. They don't need to do this but they do just to show off. Santa Monica police patrol their Promenade - a place that is 4 times larger and easily has 8 times more pedestrian traffic by foot and bicycle and they don't have any crime problems there. Go look at pictures of Hermosa Beach back in the 20's and see the crowds enjoying the beach, restaurants and bars. Over the years the party police have created 3 foot tall signs with a list of No's that have whittled the crowds down to virtually non-existent. Hermosa feels more like a retirement village run by selfish and intolerant individuals that have nothing better to do but to ruin a good time for everyone else.

Since Councilman Bobko stated that George Orwell would be offended by this smoking ban, here nice quote by George Orwell: "Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind ." (or smoke :-))

I don't smoke, I hate the smell of it and it sucks to see butts on the beach that are not sexy but what is worse than all that is some one telling others they can't do those things because they don't like them either. I expect to see or smell cigarettes when out in public. There's no big deal about it. Wish I could pass a law about my Phillipino neighbor and that stinky fish they cook!! That would be wrong though!!!! Where does the liberalism stop????
