Hermosa Leads in Water Challenge

The regional competition kicks off with Hermosa Beach taking an early lead in 1st Place as prizes are offered and more cities join in.

In an effort to demonstrate its commitment to water conservation, Hermosa Beach has become the front-runner in the regional Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.

The annual competition, founded by local artist Robert Wyland, requires residents to commit to save water throughout the month of April in honor of Earth Day.

By doing so, residents are also entering a chance to win prizes—including tickets to a Los Angeles Angels game or Disneyland. Residents can sign up online to commit to conserve water and reduce pollution in their cities.

“We urge everyone to go online and make their conservation pledge today so that Hermosa Beach can be the winner,” said Mayor Peter Tucker in a statement.

“The Mayor’s Challenge is a fun and easy way for our community to continue to demonstrate its commitment to being the South Bay leader in conserving and protecting the environment,” he said. “The Mayor’s Challenge also can increase our understanding of the importance of water conservation.”

As residents sign up to take the clean water pledge online, they’re given recommendations on ways to save water.

For example, residents can agree to use a refillable water bottle, sing shorter songs in the shower, wash only full loads of laundry, and fix a leaky faucet.

Prizes for residents who take the pledge include tickets to a special Los Angeles Angels game honoring the winning city, tickets to Disneyland and passes to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.
