Hermosa Voting Districts Could Change

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission releases a draft plan with new state electoral districts Friday. Here is what you need to know about Hermosa Beach and the new districts.

After two years of work, the 14-member California Redistricting Commission released Friday draft plans for new congressional and state districts for the entire state.

The plans show new boundaries for California's 53 congressional districts, 40 state senate districts and 80 state assembly districts, as well as districts for the state Board of Equalization, which handles taxation issues.

It means you could find yourself placed in a new congressional or state district. And it means you could find yourself suddenly part of the majority (or minority) politically.

The Beach Cities now are drawn in the coastal 36th Congressional District (which will be holding with Janice Hahn and Craig Huey vying to be representative.) Since candidate , he is not a resident of the district now, but would be in the proposed redistricting map.

In the draft changes released Friday, the district lines appear to have been expanded to include the Palos Verdes Peninsula, along with areas further north, such as Santa Monica. A part of San Pedro appears to no longer be included (see accompanying image of district maps.)

Senate District

The Beach Cities are included in the 28th Senate District, and it appears as if the proposed redistricting also expanded those district lines to include the Palos Verdes Peninsula (see accompanying image of district maps.)

The 28th Senate District currently includes Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Carson, El Segundo, and parts of Los Angeles, according to the office of state Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance).

Assembly District

The state 53rd Assembly District representing the Beach Cities appears to have changed in the draft redistricting maps to include the Palos Verdes Peninsula and no longer include Marina del Rey (see accompanying image of district maps.)

It currently includes Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Lomita, Marina del Rey, El Segundo, and portions of Los Angeles, according to the office of Assemblywoman Betsy Butler

The district maps will not be finalized until Aug. 15.
