Howard Fishman to Sit as New Mayor

Mayor Pro Tempore Howard Fishman is to rotate into the mayor position during a Hermosa Beach City Council meeting Tuesday.

At a City Council meeting Tuesday, Hermosa Beach will see new leadership as Mayor Peter Tucker is scheduled to appoint Mayor Pro Tempore Howard Fishman as the next mayor of Hermosa Beach.

Fishman was previously elected to the City Council in 2005 before he was re-elected in 2009. Fishman has been a resident and homeowner in Hermosa Beach for now about 30 years, according to his campaign website

Even though members of the City Council are elected at large, one is chosen by fellow members to serve as mayor for a period of nine months.

Serving as mayor is traditionally the result of an appointment, and not an election.

The city describes a mayor's responsibilities, along with the council, as being, "to establish policy; secure revenues; adopt an annual budget; appoint members of various city commissions and boards; and to rule on such matters as prescribed by the laws of the State of California and the City of Hermosa Beach."

This appointment will be at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
