Local Students in Contention for Presidential Scholars Program

Three high school seniors who live in Manhattan Beach are candidates for the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars program that honors excellence in academics and community service.

Two seniors at Mira Costa High School and one who attends Chadwick are in the running for the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars program, according to the program's website.

Jason M. Kim and Munam Wasi who attend MCHS and Daisy K. Jacobson who attends Chadwick on the Palos Verdes Peninsula are among some 3,000 students nationwide who have been selected to be part of the candidate pool.

Siqing Tang who attends Redondo Union High School has been selected as a Presidential Scholar, as well.

The program recognizes some of the country's most distinguished graduating high school students.

Kim, Wasi and Tang have been chosen based on high SAT or ACT scores; Jacobson, who is a candidate for Presidential Scholar in the Arts, is among a select group of 20 chosen on the basis of their academic and artistic scholarship in the visual arts, performing arts or creative writing.

A committee will next review the candidate list and narrow it down to 560 semi-finalists to be announced in April. In early May, 120 students will be selected as Academic Scholars, while 20 are named Arts Scholars. The Presidential Scholars receive medallions at a White House-sponsored ceremony.
