MoveOn to Host 'Defend the Dream' Rally on PCH

As Tuesday protests against the state and federal budgets kick off nationwide, the advocacy group convenes in front of the Hermosa Beach Community Center.

MoveOn activists plan to unite and make noise Tuesday at the Hermosa Beach  's front lawn on the corner of PCH and Pier Avenue.

The rally, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is to protest proposed cuts in funding for education and public services both on the state and federal level, according to the liberal advocacy group MoveOn's website.

"Without vision the people perish... Make the most of America by being aware," wrote organizer Daniel Levin on the Hermosa Beach event notice.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 58 people signed up to participate in the local event, which is one of at least 276 rallies being organized Tuesday across the country to protest budget cuts.

The nationwide movement, which is being called "Defend the Dream," comes just three days before lawmakers face a March 18 deadline to set the federal budget for the fiscal year.

If the proposed federal budget is approved, it would cut about 700,000 jobs across America, and "slash funding" that supports child care and college students, according to MoveOn officials.

Gov. Jerry Brown and state legislators are continuing to negotiate budget cuts and proposals here in California.
