'Moving Planet' Celebration in Beach Cities

The global event encourages communities to call for "a world beyond fossil fuels."

More than 40 environmentally friendly vendors joined South Bay governments, officials and residents Saturday morning in neighboring Manhattan Beach to celebrate "," a global festival encouraging climate action.

Moving Planet South Bay featured demonstrations of eco-friendly products and services ranging from urban chicken coops to bicycles.

The event drew attention to the South Bay's as well as the push to make the Beach Cities more healthy through the program, which encourages residents to adopt healthy and active lifestyles. The event also highlighted the and the South Bay 350 Climate Action Group.

Former Manhattan Beach Mayor Steve Napolitano, one of the many speakers at the event, called the Beach Cities the "epicenter" of the green movement. "A lot of other cities try to claim that but here in the South Bay, that is where it is really happening," he said.

Those involved with the weekend event aim to make the Beach Cities more "bikeable, walkable, and livable."
