Panel Approves Events for Next Year

The Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation Commission approves most special events that applied to be on the 2012 city calendar. Events subsequently will be brought before City Council.

The panel in a meeting Tuesday night unanimously agreed to approve all special events aiming to return to the community next year.

The commission also approved some new happenings, and tabled a decision on others. The City Council will discuss the special events in a meeting next year:

Commercial events

Commissioners approved the annual  race to take place April 21, as well as the to kick off July 6 and triathlon to hit town Oct. 7.

Two new events were approved: a Shape magazine health and wellness-focused summer beach tour in early June and a Thanksgiving turkey trot run/walk.

Nonprofit events

Project Touch's Sand and Strand race was approved for Feb. 19, and the third annual Walk for Water event, which raises money and awareness for a clean water initiative in Kenya, was approved for March 25.

Hermosa Beach Little League's in April, the in May, the in June, and volleyball event were all approved.

More volleyball tournaments also were approved to take over town, including the Amateur Athletic Union's Youth Volleyball Tournament, and USA Volleyball's and .

The commission agreed to defer its decision on USA Volleyball's high performance championships, which would be new to Hermosa Beach, until its next meeting. Another new volleyball event, a four-man volleyfest on May 12, moved forward as proposed.

Category I events

With this category of events, the city receives 30 percent net revenue based on participant rosters and incurred costs, according to city staffers (see accompanying city staff report under photo.)

The Beach Cities adult and junior tennis championships, tournaments, Hermosa Beach junior tennis tournament, tournament, and were all moved forward.
