Panel to Discuss Spyder Surfboards' Mural

The Planning Commission will consider allowing the project to reach completion, depending on how the display is defined.

The Planning Commission will decide Tuesday night whether the large Kelly Slater tribute displayed above Spyder Surfboards on PCH qualifies as a mural.

The display was brought to question in November last year when the city shut down the project, claiming that the Quiksilver logo on the tribute violates municipal code, which specifies the size of advertisements that businesses are permitted to exhibit on displays.

The Spyder artwork is too big to serve as advertising, according to the city. But it wouldn't violate code if it was classified as a mural.

"What it comes down to now is how you define the sign," said Code Enforcement Officer Bob Rollins in November.

Depending on how the sign is defined will determine what kind of permit needs to be issued for the project to continue (see accompanying staff report under photo).

The commission meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
