Water Challenge on City Council Agenda

The panel will also discuss whether to allow on-sale beer and wine during late night hours at a new eatery, and TVs at Watermans.

Mayor Pete Tucker will share with fellow council members in a meeting Tuesday night an invitation to join a Water Conservation Challenge.

The challenge, which the Wyland Foundation has organized across Southern California, is held during April and involves residents taking online pledges to save water (see accompanying memo under photo).

Each pledge is posted to a city’s account, and the town with the most pledges receives a series of prizes.

Redondo Beach Mayor Mike Gin has already accepted the challenge for his city. Torrance and Gardena are taking part as well.

"Mayors often issue friendly challenges to see whose city has the best football team," said foundation founder and artist Robert Wyland in a statement. "We wanted this challenge to give them a way to build that same kind of excitement, but focus it on one of the most important issues Southern California will face in the next decade."

The council will hold a public hearing to review another Planning Commission decision, which restricts the number of televisions allowed at on Pier Plaza.

The City Council meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in council chambers.
