Cinco de Mayo Con Mis Amigos

Students from Mis Amigos Spanish enrichment program at Hermosa View School perform and share Mexican culture.

On Friday, May 4, students at Hermosa View School got a fun look at Mexican culture in honor of Cinco de Mayo.

Students from the after school Spanish Enrichment Program at the school performed folklorico dances and sang La Bamba and Cielito Lindo for the rest of the student body.

The Mis Amigos program is run and taught by parent Monica Linnell, who was born in Mexico. She started the program in 2009 as a way to build bridges and expose children to other languages.

"It started as a volunteer position," she said about the program. She is currently teaching 16 students conversational Spanish. "I saw the need for the program because of the cuts in language education."

Friday's program not only featured posters about the holiday, which celebrates the Mexican victory over the French in Puebla on May 5, 1862, but the student performances and a folklorico dancer.

"I love my culture," said Linnell, who moved to the U.S. when she was 5 years old. "I just get so fascinated sharing it with the people who want to hear about it. It makes it easy and just something I love."

Freedom is based on a sure identity, that I know who I am, but more importantly WHOSE I am. WhenRead More the LORD sent Moses to deliver His people, that was the beginning of their liberty. They were a particular people to the LORD, whose name is better understand as "He who was, is, and always will be." Not a god made of stone or wood, but the One who made, makes, and evermore makes and gives to us: the LORD took Israel by the hand and led them from bondage to slavery. Not who you are, but whose you are, makes all the difference between bondage and liberty: "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father." (Romans 8: 15) Have you been adopted yet? "
