Newsweek: RUHS Top 500 High School

Newsweek and the Washington Post rank Redondo Union High School on their lists of America's top high schools.

Redondo Union High School has landed on Newsweek's and the Washington Post's lists of the best high schools in America this month.

Newsweek, which released its ranking of the top 500 schools in the country Sunday, identified the local high school as No. 405 on its list.

The news magazine calculated scores for the schools based on a institution's graduation rate, college matriculation rate, number of Advanced Placement courses taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP score and the number of AP courses offered. Redondo was given a score of 0.234.

The School of Science and Engineering Magnet in Dallas, TX earned the highest score of 2.874.

Redondo Union of 97 percent, and 99 percent of those students attend college the fall after graduation. The school has a 31-to-1 student to teacher ratio, and the average SAT score is 1642.

The only other South Bay high schools on Newsweek's list included Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, which ranked No. 60, and South Torrance, which ranked No. 320.

The Washington Post's list, which only looked at the ratio of AP and IB tests taken per student, ranked Redondo Union at No. 611, with an average of 2.273 AP tests per student. 

Other local high schools, El Segundo (No. 1534), Mira Costa (No. 416) and Palos Verdes (No. 305), also made the Washington Post's list. Though it's not online due to an oversight by the reporter, Peninsula High School ranked within the top 200 schools, according to the Daily Breeze.
